There are many different reasons for the success of the United States of America. Just as Albert Gore wanted credit for the creation of the Internet, many want to claim credit. But, in reality, many of the most important developments are conducted behind-the-scenes. Education is a great example of this truism.
Philanthropist Dick Devos is working hard to ensure that all Michigan children have the same access to good schools. It should not be based on parent’s wealth, but upon the opportunity to learn. Isn’t that really what America is all about?
America: Land of Opportunity
Why have immigrants risked their very lives to reach America? The Cuban boat people are a prime example. The fortunate have been able to tread upon the land of the free and the home of the brave: America.
What did America offer that other countries did not offer? In so many countries, vast unresponsive bureaucracies have been created that had no interest in the well-being of the people. Nineteenth-century author Horatio Alger wrote “rags to riches” tales central to his books for adolescents. This is key to the success story of America.
How could these individuals become successful? Education is one of the key benefits of a free society. In 2000, Michigan philanthropist Dick Devos and his wife, Betty Devos sponsored a constitutional amendment for Michigan to create tax-funded vouchers so that poor students could attend private schools. Although that ballot-initiative failed, the Devos have not given up.
Education for Everyone
What is more American than the concept of great education? Unfortunately, the United States might no longer lead the world, in some very important development categories. For example, there are ZERO American-based television manufacturers.
How can America be great, if it does not have the smartest children? Michigan charter schools have continued to grow, thanks to Dick Devos. Our Creator chooses who has the skills. As stewards of the earth, the Devos are giving the gifted and talented, the opportunity to live the American Dream.
Horatio Alger wrote his stories in the 1800s, but it seems that Mr. Devos is an adherent to this ideology today. The true strength of America is in its children. The children are the future.
