The United States spent decades importing natural gas through Gulf Coast terminals built for exactly that purpose. Kelcy Warren saw an opening to flip that model, and Energy Transfer bought one of those import terminals, Lake Charles in Louisiana, before converting it into an export facility as American shale production climbed.

Turning Import Terminals Into Export Hubs

The shift began in earnest around 2016, when liquefied natural gas terminals started sending large volumes of American gas to Asia and, later, helping European buyers reduce their reliance on Russian supply. Energy Transfer also picked up the shuttered Marcus Hook refinery in Pennsylvania, one of seven repurposed terminals the company now counts among its export assets. Kelcy Warren has framed the pivot as a matter of matching supply to demand rather than any grand vision, noting that his industry moves on volumes and spreads rather than predictions.

Growing Export Capacity

Energy Transfer now exports liquefied petroleum gas, butane, and ethane to more than ninety countries, and it stands as the largest exporter of ethane, a byproduct that industry players once simply discarded. Current LNG exports run around 13 billion cubic feet a day, with plans to grow that figure closer to 30 billion cubic feet as new capacity comes online. Warren has said that when a driller in West Texas needs somewhere to send new supply, his company has to already know it can handle it, a commitment that shapes how far in advance Energy Transfer builds. The company is also looking at opportunities outside the country, including projects in the Middle East and Latin America, with Warren singling out Panama as a location he finds particularly promising. What started as a single converted import terminal has grown into a network connecting American shale fields to buyers on nearly every continent. Energy security became a bigger part of that story after Russia’s actions in Europe pushed countries in the Middle East and North Africa to look for new customers of their own, adding urgency to a build out Warren had already set in motion years earlier.
