Medical training usually centers on technique Dr. Andrew Jacono wants future facial plastic surgeons to learn something more: how to use their skills for people who could never afford them.
He holds the position of Fellowship Director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. That role lets him shape how the next generation thinks about humanitarian work. His fellows receive training in surgical technique alongside a broader ethical framework for serving underserved populations.
Classrooms and Hospital Wards
His influence extends into academic medicine. Dr. Andrew Jacono holds an appointment at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also serves as Section Head of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at North Shore University Hospital. Both positions bring him into contact with medical students and residents who are still deciding what kind of surgeons they will become.
The message he brings is that charity care can be part of a surgical career rather than an occasional add-on.
A Record That Backs the Lessons
Students can look to his own work as proof. He has reconstructed the faces of more than 100 domestic violence survivors through the academy’s FACE TO FACE project, where he is senior advisor. Internationally, he has treated more than 750 children on missions with Healing the Children, the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) Foundation, and THAI Children.
Those missions, held roughly twice a year in places like Colombia, Ecuador, Thailand, and Vietnam, frequently include fellow surgeons. Patients have cleft lip and palate, microtia, facial tumors, or burn scars.
His teaching draws on a formative experience. As a medical student, he saw surgery transform the life of a girl teased for her cleft lip and palate.
Dr. Andrew Jacono, who is dual board certified, still runs a Park Avenue practice. Through his academic roles, he aims to multiply his impact, training surgeons who will carry the same commitment to their own communities and beyond. Refer to this article for related information.
